International House

International House was founded in 1953 when John and Brita Haycraft opened their first language school in Cordoba, Spain. In 1964 they set up a non-profit-making Educational Trust committed to raising the standards of English language teaching and training world-wide.

John Haycraft sought to promote international understanding through language learning and teacher training. He introduced the first training programme for teachers of English as a Foreign Language, which blended teaching theory and practice.

Trainees taught real students and were observed by experienced trainers who gave them support and feedback. The teacher training course developed at International House was the forerunner of the Cambridge ESOL CELTA.

Our school has been built to meet the needs of our students and teachers. The building is light, airy and spacious.

Classrooms are designed for small group learning with flexible seating, computer access and interactive whiteboards.

The school has several dedicated areas for personal learning. Our Student Self Access computer area has digital facilities where you can practise speaking and listening. The learning resource library is well-stocked, has computer access and plenty of seating for private study.

If you need to read over your notes or relax and chat with friends there’s the less formal café area, where a selection of hot and cold food and drink is served, or there’s the sky lounge on the fifth floor.

Although the building dates from the 1930s, the interiors are modern and the School has all of the services and facilities you would expect.
